Practical experience with a new method of detecting the remains of disinfectants and similar cleaning materials in glass bottles after washing is described and the technical background to the mechanism of corrosion is explained. The effects of factors such as temperature on the extraction of alkali from glass and the migration of various elements from glass containers are outlined with reference to the technical literature. The main problem appears to be the migration of sodium ions from the glass into the rinsing water, so methods of dealing with this problem are presented.
