Compositional Dependence Of Cdse Quantum Dot Formation On Silicate Host Glass Composition

Silicate glasses were synthesized with additional CdO and ZnSe of varying content. When CdO was added up to 3 mol% with the amount of ZnSe fixed at 1 mol%, absorption due to Se2 colour centres significantly decreased and the colour of glasses as bleached without any evidence of CdSe quantum dots. However, characteristic absorption due to CdSe quantum dots appeared without additional heat treatment when the ZnSe content exceeded 1.5 mol%, whereas the CdO content was fixed at 1 mol%. Raman spectra and transmission electron microscopy verified the formation of CdSe quantum dots.
