Household density is often used as a characteristic to categorise authorities with similar refuse collections costs. However, this article explains why the practice of using household density in strategic models to evaluate the costs of waste collection options is unlikely to produce reliable results. Rather, it is more reliable to base predictions on the average number of households served by collection vehicles within a managed collection area.
