Common Bases For Pollution Prevention And Control

The implementation of the EC Directive on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) will be very important for all sectors of the glass industry. As an industry which is regulated largely on a local or regional basis, the concepts of integrated pollution and control are much wider ranging than the existing controls for air, water and land which are applied separately. The regulatory procedures may be more complex. The BAT Reference Documents will define the control technologies, both primary and secondary, and the documents will then form the basis of regulation for the industry for the foreseeable future. The BREF for glass manufacture cannot be anticipated until those for other industries, such as cement and iron and steel, are available later this year.
