Coloured Glasses (In French)

Many glass colorants are ions of transition elements which often produce the colours of their salts or aqueous solutions (rare earth ions, which absorb weakly in narrow bands, are used only in special cases). Colorations, red and yellow in particular, may also be produced by collodial suspensions of metals or semi-conductors while the pink of selenium is considered as a molecular solution. Some colours are produced complexes involving two different ionic species. It is always important to know how much a colour is influenced by the composition of the glass, the redox state and by the presence of other colorants.
