Colouration by thermochemical reduction of calcia-full stabilized zirconia single crystals containing 12 mol% of calcia is monitored by optical absorption and photoluminescence techniques. Confirmation about a progressive shift of the absorption edge in the crystals with colouration degree is given. A similar shift evolution is found for the peak position of excitation spectrum of luminescence with the thermochemical reduction. The results are consistent with an additional increase in the concentration of oxygen vacancies and their complexes.
