Silica is and will remain the dominant refractory for the crowns of glass melting furnaces in the foreseeable future. It has a relatively low cost and a high chemical purity suitable for the conditions of glass melting. The main factors limiting the service life of the silica crowns are the maximum working temperature up to 1620 deg C, the limited resistance to alkaline corrosion and rat-holing.
