The search for coatings that defy chemical and mechanical degradation on commercial products remains ongoing at Alfred University through research into characterization of fluorine-doped tin dioxide as thin films; sol-gel coatings for multi-use; plasma nitriding; development of glass-ceramic superconductive materials; plasma-deposited coatings. Extensive studies of effects of environment on glass, particularly high temperature and moisture, have focused on fracture and surface viscosity. As every application of glass involves exposure to some degree of chemical or mechanical degrading, coatings research remains a viable facet of the NYSCC glass research program.
