A major factor determining a well cleaned part prior to enamelling is to obtain a "water break" free surface. An important aspect of any successful cleaning operation is to control the type and amount of lubricants which are on the part itself, proper maintenance of equipment and proper selection of cleaner chemistry. With new developments in electronic process control equipment to minimise water useage, chemical costs and potential quality defects, the art of preparing metal surfaces prior to enamelling has changed significantly. This paper reviews the optimum characteristics: washer equipment; control systems; recycling cleaners; troubleshooting.
