Taiwan Glass announced that it plans to spend USD 62M over the next 3y to build a factory on a reclaimed industrial park in central Taiwan to produce glass for solar cells & wind-power equipment. The Ministry of Economic Affairs estimated that the investment would add USD 187M/pa to Taiwan's industrial revenue. The ministry said it would assist the glassmaker by offering incentives, which include a 5y tax break, preferential land price, subsidy on R&D projects, & labour-shortage relief programme. Taiwan Glass said it plans to produce transparent conductive oxide (TCO) glass ultra-white glass for solar cells, along with high-performance glass fiber & low-radiation glass for wind-power gears. MOEA officials felt demands for these materials would surge sharply, bringing in the island' traditional-glass industry lucrative business opportunities. Taiwan Glass' primary product lines are architectural glazing and glass fibers for electronic devices, and are currently numbered at 600,000 metric tons and 50,000 metric tons a year, respectively.
