In A Class Of Its Own

Glass has waged many battles in recent years to preserve its market share. Both plastic and cartonboard have savaged that share in the dairy sector and look likely to continue to do so, but glass, continues to confound its critics. According to market analyst Euromonitor, demand for glass from suppliers of oils and fats rocketed between 1998 and 2004 by 57%. Glass was also heavily in demand for alcoholic and soft drinks, rising by 36% and 35% respectively. Sauces, dressings and condiments came in a close third with an increase of 33% and, looking at the 5 years spanning 2004-9, Euromonitor forecasts additional growth for glass in the cosmetics and toiletries, soft drinks, baby food, sauces, dressings and condiments sectors. Surprisingly, growth in the alcoholic beverage market is expected to cool.
