Since the Chinese Open Door Policy was instituted int he 1980's, economic development has become an important goal in China's modernisation. The production of Chinese bauxite and brown fused alumina (BFA) have rapidly grown in recent years due to increasing market demand inside and outside of the region. Increased production of bauxite and BFA has strongly influenced the price and consumption of related products on a worldwide basis. This paper reviews the sources, manufacture, and price fluctuations of Chinese calcined bauxite and BFA, and provides a discussion on the development and future of these products in China.
