[China] Government To Attempt To Curb Plant Expansions

It is very likely that the Chinese government will not ratify new float glass production projects in the central & eastern parts of China, the Shanghai Securities News reported. In accordance with the "Criteria for Access to Float Glass Industry" which took effect September, glass manufacturers are required to focus on the renovation of glass production lines. Meanwhile, the rule sets strict entry criteria for glassmakers, such as the layout of enterprises, techniques & facilities, product variety & quality, energy consumption & environmental protection. Glass production facilities with a total capacity of 12M weight boxes will be shut down by the local authorities by the end of 2007, in order to upgrade the float glass industry, save energy, & reduce pollution. A total of 30M weight boxes will be removed from production by 2010.
