Samples of carbonated soft drinks (clear and cloudy, lemon, orange and cola) made with aspartame, acesulfame, cyclamate and saccharin, and supplemented with vitamins, were packaged in 1.25-litre glass or 1.5-litre PET bottles. At 4-week intervals up to 6 months of storage, samples were analysed for CO2, vitamin C, acetaldehyde, sensory properties, colour, aroma compound spectrum, sweeteners, biotin, vitamin B6 and calcium pantothenate. Similar studies were conducted on mineral water packaged in glass and PET bottles; these samples were analysed for acetaldehyde during storage. Results for carbonated soft drinks show that samples in PET bottles underwent more rapid loss of CO2 and vitamin C and greater darkening than those in glass bottles.
