Increased productivity of today's container glass production requires an engineered material solution for neck rings. Here, the rigorous conditions in this area are examined with respect to the proper selection of materials. As a consequence of technical demands, combined with constant pressure on mould shops to reduce production costs, methods to improve performance are continuously being sought. The latest innovation is the application of "bi-metallic casting" or compound casting for this component. As described in this paper, cast iron bi-cast around a nickel based insert could initiate a renaissance of the use of cast iron for neck rings.
