Health Canada has proposed adoption of SGCD's lip and rim leaching standard for all decorated glass and ceramic ware distributed in Canada. The lip and rim area includes the rim and the top 20mm of the outside surface of a drinking vessel. The SGCD standard sets a maximum allowable leaching level of 4ppm for lead and 0.4ppm for cadmium from this area. The existing Canadian standard is 25ppm for lead and 1.75ppm for cadmium which reflects the previous SGCD standard which was lowered to its current level in 1999. Health Canada specifies that ASTM C-927 "Standard Test Method for Lead and Cadmium Extracted from the Lip and Rim Area of Glass Tumblers Externally Decorated with Ceramic Glass Enamels" to be utilised to determine leaching levels.
