There are four basic processes that can be used for adding value to glass articles: Mechanical processing (cutting, engraving, frosting); Heat treatment (re-melting, sintering); Chemical processing (etching, matting); and Coating (painting, iridising, lustering). Acid polishing of glass articles can be regarded as a combination of mechanical, thermal and chemical processes. A series of tests found that waste heat generated firing the fire polishing process can be recovered by using a new modular heat exchanger, which is cheaper and environmentally-friendly.
