Calp: Temporary Lay-Off Scheme

Italian crystal products manufacturer CALP and trade unions have signed an agreement to put 119 workers under a temporary lay-off scheme on rotation for 24 months, starting September 2006. Those affected will remain CALP employees but will be paid a lower salary from the Italian Government's Special Lay-off Benefits Fund. There will be a reduction in the working week for remaining employees. CALP had originally presented a plan which would have resulted in 224 redundancies from a total workforce of 565. The company will also hold talks with trade unions on a restructuring plan which will involve the reorganisation of production processes. CALP, based in the province of Siena, northern Italy, produces 90% of Italy's crystal products and 15% of crystal products worldwide under several brands, including RCR and Da Vinci Crystal.
