Italian crystal manufacturer CALP (Siena, north central Italy) plans significant cuts in its workforce as part of a restructuring presented 24 February 2006. The company sees 220 redundancies out of a total staff of 550. Union representative Tomas Borromeo of Filcem-Cgil described the cuts as a very heavy blow, adding that the plan could undermine the foundations of the company. Unions blame the crisis at CALP on a management approach which has not taken account of the changes in the world crystal market.
