California Glass Plant Closes Over Emissions Row

Guardian Industries, the USA-based float glass producer, has blamed emissions control demands for its decision to close its patterned glass manufacturing site at Fullerton, CA. The site was acquired by Guardian in the he early 1980s and produced glass for shower doors, patio furniture and solar energy use. It is in need of significant refurbishment but Guardian has concluded that business conditions do not justify additional capital spending on the plant. Peter Walters, group Vice-President, said the air quality management authorities for the district around Fullerton insisted that the company install a costly pollution control system at the next furnace rebuild, rather than buy emissions credits. Guardian will continue to supply patterned glass from another site in the USA. (whole item)
