Production of world-famous Caithness glass is to end with the closure of the company's factory in Wick. 30 workers lost their jobs as receivers confirmed there was no future for glassmaking in the town. The news has shattered the community. The staff were told that they were to be made redundant with immediate effect. 20 are being kept on to wind down the factory over the next few weeks. Receivers Deloitte and Touche say the visitor centre and restaurant at Wick will remain open until further notice. Owners Royal Worcester & Spode blamed difficult market conditions for the decision to call in the receivers in February. Deloitte & Touche say it has become apparent that the high cost base of production operations mean there's little interest in retaining the site as a going concern.
