British Glass Calls For Linked Materials And Council Recycling Targets

BG has said more successful recycling requires closer correlation between local authority & packaging materials targets & linking waste with carbon emissions. David Workman welcomed the updated business recycling & recovery targets for packaging, published by the government February, but expressed concerns over having the right "finance & infrastructure" in place to accommodate "much higher rates". New target for glass is 78% rising to 81% 2010. He said there would be "no CO2 savings" if materials were collected & mixed together & the only option was to put them in roads. "We've got to look at what is meant by recycling & need to focus on LA's segregating the waste they collect rather than co-mingling," adding there was "no reason" why the sector would not meet the targets but current infrastructure meant that "real" closed-loop recycling "may well go in the opposite direction".
