This history of the development of the use of electricity in the glass industry is reviewed, leading up to recent improvements in the use of electricity in glass melting and conditioning processes. The advantages of electric heating over gas/oil firing are discussed and conclusions reached confirming that for a number of glasses, especially those containing volatile/toxic constituents, the use of electric melting and conditioning is the preferred choice.
