Attempts have been made to beneficiate phosphgypsum, an industrial by-product waste by various methods: (i) washing with water only, (ii) washing with water in presence of chemicals, and (iii) washing with chemical under steam pressure. Washing with chemical under steam pressure yielded best result in the context of removal of impurities. The CaSO4, 2H20 content could be increased from 89.0% (such as phosphogypsum) to 98.5% (beneficiated phosphogypsum). Plaster of Paris prepared from the beneficiated gypsum and that from selenite sypsum are of comparable properties.
