Belgian Tax

Belgium has introduced a tax on disposable drinks packaging. The tax, based on an extension of the "Ecoboni" Law of 1993, removes the exemption for disposable drinks packaging that had been granted due to high recycling levels achieved under the country's Green Dot scheme. The tax, of Euros 9.85 on every 100 litres of drinks sold, applies to steel and aluminium cans, cartons, plastic bottles and non-refillable glass bottles. The new tax is designed to encourage the use of reusable packaging by Belgian consumers.
