The celestite and strontium carbonate industries are intrinsically linked. Indeed, virtually the entire global output of celestite is utilised in the manufacture of the carbonate since SrCO3 rarely exists in nature. Celstite is the mineral source of strontium carbonate, produced either by the black ash route or by direct conversion with soda ash. For the former, the carbonate is formed via a dry or calcining method, whereby strontium sulphate is reduced by coal to form a water-soluble sulphide and is filtered to remove any large impurities. Then either soda ash or carbon dioxide is used to convert the sulphide to a precipitated carbonate.
