Basic Refractories For Glass Furnace Regenerators

This article takes a look at "basic" refractories, ie, the group of materials based on the oxide "magnesia" (MgO). Originally developed for steel-making furnaces, their resistance to high temperature, alkaline conditions make the well suited to withstand the severe conditions that exist within glass furnace regenerators. However, the glass industry represents only ~5% of total consumption; their usage within steel and cement production dominates.
