Bankit is calling for government to take a central role in co-ordinating programmes to educate children about recycling after research carried out by the non-profit organisation revealed a huge variation in the way local authorities (LAs) across the UK are tackling the issue. Research carried out by Bankit found that some LA's allocate up to 70% of their communications budget to this, while others assign nothing! Remarkably, in only 14% of LA's the responsibility of recycling education programmes fell on education departments. In 86% of cases it was the responsibility of waste management departments. Many LA's said lack of resources were preventing them from doing better. Bankit is a Rexam Glass initiative that is supported by Glass Recycling UK Ltd. The research was carried out on its dedicated LA resource website: www.bankit.org
