Since the birth of the automobile over 100 years ago, changes in its design and manufacture have undoubtedly been huge. The impact of the car on humans and our world has also been enormous. Social and environmental consequences have now reached such proportions that they can no longer be ignored. This article looks at ways in which the automobile is likely to develop in the next century, taking into account social and environmental issues.
