The use of glass decorating products in the automotive industry began around 40 years ago with the introduction of silver pastes for screenprinting. In the 1970s, when silver metal-based screenprinting pastes were widely used to defog and/or defrost backlites, the decoration of automotive glass leaped forward when car makers introduced the technqiue of gluing glass into the car bodies, which required protection of the polyurethane glue. Glass enamels were the ideal solution. In this article the author looks at the history, current and future developments & requirements of the various product groups used to decorate automotive glass.
