This paper describes the application of integrated photoelasticity for the non-destructive measurement of residual stresses in glass articles of complicated shape. Basic linearized relationships of integrated photoelasticity are presented. Stress measurement in case of strong, as well as weak, birefringence is considered. Since photoelastic measurements give directly only distribution of the axial and shear stress, a method for calculating other stress components is presented. Automatic measurement apparatus is described. Several examples illustrate practical application of the method.
