Assovetro Wins Appeal On Glass Bottles Ban

In Italy, the Tuscan regional court has upheld an appeal filed by Assovetro, cancelling an ordinance made by the city council of Siena by which the evening sale of all take-away bottled beverages had been banned. The local authorities' aim, both for sanitary purposes and for the safety of garbage collectors, was to prevent people from discarding small bottles. Three important glass companies defended by Assovetro - AVIR, Bormioli and Vetr.I, opposed the council's order, saying they had been unjustly harmed. One of the points on which the glass manufacturers' complaint was founded was the charge of "evident unreasonableness", which was decisive. According to the sentence, in the case of special events such an emergency measure favours city cleanliness, but that it should remain in force throughout the year is incomprehensible.
