Glass containers provide several advantages as regards to food protection and consumers' health. However, glass packaging can present defects either before arriving in the food industry or during the various stages of the food production. Critical defects may result in rejection by the food company or, when inspections fail, in glass breakage. Although the probability of this kind of occurrence is relatively low in food industries, fragments of glass packaging can get into food and cause severe damages to consumers. Thus, this article aims to introduce the issues related to the safety of food in glass packaging, such as common defects found in glass jars and bottles, and the risk assessment of these products.
