Application Of Ultraviolet Fluroescence Spectroscopy To Glass Basicity: Tl+ And Pb2+ In The Na2O-P205 System

Excitation and emission spectra of the probe ions Tl+ and Pb2+ in the Na2O-P2O5 glass system are found to undergo a red shift with increasing Na2O. The results indicate how fluorescence spectroscopy can be used for measuring the optical basicity of sites available in glass and this is expected to be particularly useful for Tl+ in systems where the absorption spectrum of this ion is masked owing to the generation of thallium (III) which absorbs strongly in the ultraviolet region.
