The theoretical investigation of the generation and relaxation of stresses in glass during annealing falsifies the assumption that the permanent stress in the glass in cold state is equal and opposite to the stress which has disappeared by viscous relaxation. Formulas are included for the calculation of stresses which might be generated in and after annealing and which depend largely on the rate of cooling and on the initial temperature. Examples are given.
