ANFEVI, the organisation which represents Spain's glass packaging manufacturers, said 23/01/07 that the glass recycled in 2006 led to a saving of 900,000/t of raw materials in Spain. For each tonne of recycled glass there is a saving of 1.2/t raw materials, with a consequent reduction of the erosion resulting from prospecting & extraction, ANFEVI explained in a press release. In addition, container glass recycling contributes to the fulfillment of the Kyoto protocol, as 1/t glass made from recycled containers uses 130 Kg less fuel than 1/t made from raw materials. Over the last 10/y, glass recycling has resulted in a saving of 8,000/t oil equivalent. A study carried out by Perfiles Institute for ANFEVI showed 53% of Spaniards considered the main benefit of glass recycling is safeguarding the environment, while 21% think the main benefit is economic.
