Amorim Unveils Plans For "Simple" Cork To Challenge Screw Caps & Stoppers

Portuguese cork giant Amorim, has revealed that it is developing a wine cork that could be removed from the bottle without the need for a corkscrew. The development process is currently at the trial stage and is a response to the growing popularity of synthetic and screw-cap closures for wine bottles. Speaking at a press conference where Amorim presented the results of a new life-cycle analysis comparing cork closures with rival products, M Cabral, Amorim head of R&D said: "We want corks to have the simplicity that screwcaps have brought to wine stoppers." Few details of how the closure would work were revealed, but Cabral said that the concept had been in development for two years and had already been presented to wine producers.
