The EC published an amended proposal for a Directive of the EU Parliament & Council laying down rules on nominal quantities for pre-packed products, repealing Directives 75/106/EEC & 80/232/EEC, & amending Directive 76/211/EEC, on 12 April 2006. The Proposal sets out the opinion of the Commission on various amendments adopted by the Parliament, including the view that some prescribed quantities should be retained for the time being. The Commission also agrees with the Parliament that two more sizes should be added to the PQ range for spirits & that spirit drinks should replace this term. Nevertheless, an amendment from the Parliament seeking to exempt a number of sectors where national legislation on PQs such as bread should continue to apply has not been accepted by the Commission because, in its opinion, there is no evidence for the need to regulate these sectors.
