This study evaluated the barrier properties of an alternative glass package for soluble coffee, comprising a heat sealed aluminium foil film and protective external snap-cap. The performance of this new alternative was compared to that of the conventional system presently in use, which consists of a glass jar with cold-bonded flexible laminate and a protective polypropylene (PP) plastic-twist cap. The stability of the soluble coffee packed in both types of systems was also evaluated during storage under two different temperatures and relative humidity condition combinations after having submitted the packages to a transport simulation test. The foil-mate system was found to be effective in terms of water vapour and oxygen barrier properties, which were superior to those of the conventional system.
