Allied Glass Invest In Furnaces

Allied Glass is investing £10M to renew 2 glass furnaces over a 3y period, securing the jobs of 400 staff. Renewing the first furnace began Jan/07, following the decommissioning of the site's main furnace after 10y of operation. During its life, the furnace melted over 800,000/t glass, around 1.5BN bottles. The company specialises in making containers in complex shapes, such as flasks, flagons & bottles for specific brands. The new furnace will be one of the UK glass industry's most energy efficient & incorporate the latest controls to ensure the company meets strict environmental targets. Andrew Spencer, CE, said: "This is very good news for our customers, staff & for manufacturing in Leeds. Our company has been making glass in Hunslet for over 100 years & we have built up a wealth of experience that has enabled the business to compete successfully & grow."
