[Africa] Malawi - Bottle Shortages Drives Up Prices

Consumers in some districts in the southern region have started digging deep in their pockets for soft drinks bottles, due to their rising scarcity. The drinks shortage has hit several districts & forced some traders to hike prices. According to Bottling & Brewing Group Ltd (BBGL) Communications Officer M Mbekeani, the shortage is due to high demand on the market. "This can be attributed to the start of the peak season, the weather changing & demand for carbonate soft drinks is high," she said. She also attributed the shortage to unavailability of glass bottles. "The other challenge we are facing as a bottler is lack of glass to enable efficient production of our products. Returnable glass bottles are not being returned & are stocked by customers." BBGL recently launched a "Bring Back the Bottle" campaign to enhance glass bottle collection.
