Silica, the traditional furnace melter crown material, has a theoretical operating temperature limit of 1630 deg C. This has been one of the major factors limiting the maximum operating temperature of conventional regenerative glass tanks in the past and has been an obstacle in the design and adoption of oxy-fuel fired furnaces. According to the author of this paper, magensia-alumina spinel is a refractory solution that allows higher operating temperatures, giving the potential benefits of higher energy efficiencies and higher pull rates in conventional furnaces and the cost-effective design and operation of oxy-fuel fired furnaces.
