Glamaco Coswig, the German glass machine manufacturer, has recently developed an advanced technique for laser-welding flat glasses in a joint project with the research institute IFW Institute for Joining Technology and Material Testing GmbH in Jena, Germany. The technique was presented as the result of a patent solution for the first time at Glasstec 2000 last October. The advanced welding technique uses a hybrid process of jet and heat energies, which allow the process of joining silicate materials to take place by putting hardly any stress at all on the glassware. The company claims that, compared to traditional methods, this laser technology offers a high quality welding seam which is extremely useful for joining flat glasses for various purposes.
