After 30 years of production, Guardian Ind ceased operations at Kingsburg, CA to conduct its second cold tank repair. Planned improvements to operations during the repair required a New Source Review & installation of Lowest Achievable Emission Rate pollution control technology. Regulations for glass furnaces adopted in the USA by the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District required replacement of the existing electrostatic precipitator for particulate control with a modern air quality control system for the reduction of SOx, particulate matter, & NOx. The AQC system was commissioned in Q3/08, & is successfully meeting initial permit emission limits. In this article, from Glass Worldwide May-June the AQC plant is described and performance data are given. It should be noted that the NOx reduction state is the first application in the USA.
