An innovative method for the production of advanced ceramic fibres has been patented by a British inventor. Gerard Curran has produced the new fibres by the simultaneous extrusion of both inorganic precursors; the fibre consists of a reinforcement core material, which can be an oxide or a non-oxide material, and an interfacial sheath, which prevents reaction with a metal matrix and acts as a low shear strength fracture toughening mechanism to prevent absorption by a ceramic matrix.
