Active Barrier. Extending The Shelf Life Of Pet

The development by Amcor PET Packaging Europe/Asia (formerly the PET division of Schmalbach-Lubeca) of laminated bottles, composed of a layer of an oxygen scavenging material called "Bind-Ox" sandwiched between two layers of PET and intended for products susceptible to oxidative deterioration (such as beer) which have an uneconomically short shelf life in plain PET bottles because that plastic's relatively high gas permeability leads to a fairly rapid uptake of sufficient oxygen to impair the quality of the bottle's contents, is described. It is claimed that the "Bind-Ox" bottles can protect beer against oxidative deterioration as effectively as glass bottles or even more so and that they are fully recycleable (Amcor has established a recycling facility at its PET bottle factory in Beaune, France, so that new bottles made there may have a recycled PET content of up to 50%).
