90M Bottles Go Lightweight

An estimated 90M bottles of wine will be made lighter in the next year as retailers aim to go green. According to the government-funded Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) the UK wine industry will save around 6,000 tonnes of glass packaging every year. Retailers including Morrisons and Tesco have confirmed they are working towards using lighter weight glass bottles. Tesco aims to put its branded wines in lighter bottles by the end of the year. Tesco category manager, Andy Gale, said: "The lightweight bottles will make a significant contribution to our target to cut packaging by 25% by 2010." Constellation Europe also plans to put the Stowells and Echo Falls range in lighter glass, saving 2,800 tonnes of glass every year.
