Encirc named sustainable manufacturer of the year

Specialist bottler and glass manufacturer, Encirc, is celebrating after triumphing at The Manufacturer MX Awards 2015.

Encirc brought home gold in the Sustainable Manufacturing category, after impressing the judging panel during its tours of finalists’ facilities. The judges praised the manufacturer’s innovative and progressive approach to minimising its environmental impact, commenting that it “lived and breathed sustainability”.

In the last 12 months alone, Encirc has consolidated its deliveries into fewer loads to take lorries off the roads, and modified its warehouse to hold larger pallets, which has reduced its use of plastic packaging by 146,000kg and significantly cut the waste it sends to landfill. The manufacturer has also implemented Trees for Me, an initiative designed to help offset its carbon emissions by planting more than 1,500 trees at its Elton site.

Fiacre O’Donnell, head of strategic development and sustainability lead at Encirc, explained:

“Sustainability is an integral part of the 360-degree support we provide customers, which is why we have taken so many steps to boost efficiency and minimise energy consumption across our facilities.

“We are already building on our achievements, with new initiatives in the pipeline for next year to further cut our own environmental impact and support our customers in shrinking their carbon footprint at the same time.”

Judges Ronnie Hamilton, management consultant, and Kerry Mashford, chief executive at National Energy Foundation, added:

“Encirc stood out for innovating outside of its core products and process to provide a more sustainable, integrated product and service system for its customers.

“Company representatives are actively involved in sustainability leadership in their sector and region and the biodiversity programmes fully involve employees and the local community, actively providing a benefit for all.”

The Manufacturer MX Awards recognise achievements in sustainability, innovation and competitiveness across the manufacturing sector. This is the first year the accolade has been held, after a merger of The Manufacturer of the Year Awards, hosted by The Manufacturer magazine, and Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Manufacturing Excellence (MX) Awards.
