Glass appreciation – an introduction to glass

Delivered by Glass Technology Services, Glass appreciation introduces delegates to glass processes, products and the benefits of using glass – together with practical sessions for both making and inspecting glass.


Whether delegates design, make, sell or reuse glass this course will provide them with the understanding to improve their work with this complex material. Prime candidates include: new starters to the glass industry, packers and fillers of food and drink products, brands, retailers or glass reprocessors.


The course is presented in an informative, interactive, format – delivered by specialists in their respective fields. Essential topics from manufacture, processing and basic chemistry to properties, defects and failure are covered in an accessible format making this an ideal introduction for anyone working in glass or otherwise dealing with glass products or issues.


Theoretical and practical sessions on the day will include;

  • What is glass?
  • A brief history of glass manufacturing
  • Glass properties
  • Composition, batch and melting of glass
  • Colouring and decoration of glass
  • Annealed and toughed, or tempered glass
  • Making glass
  • Forming, pouring and casting of glass
  • Annealing
  • Glass – the environment and recyclability
  • Glass strength, handling, defects and failure.
