British Glass responds to the Building our industrial strategy green paper

British Glass has submitted a glass sector-level response, with input from its membership, to the government’s Building our industrial strategy green paper.

British Glass policy experts reviewed the ten pillars and 38 questions of the green paper to pinpoint the areas of greatest significance for glass – and discussed these with members through their committees and forums.

The final response stresses the need for the government industrial strategy to:

  • provide a robust, secure infrastructure for gas and renewable electricity and enable UK manufacturing to compete globally by ensuring competitive energy prices (UK electricity costs are currently among the highest in Europe)
  • improve the UK recycling infrastructure, and so enable glass manufacturing to improve energy and resource efficiency by replacing raw materials with post-consumer waste glass
  • support collaboration between industry and academia to drive technological innovation.

Nick Kirk, British Glass technical director said:

“The rate of change in markets, manufacturing and technology is faster than ever. If UK industry is to remain internationally competitive it is vital we have dialogue with government that enables fast-paced, evidence-based decision- and policy-making. We welcome the government’s proposal of an overarching industrial strategy and hope this green paper marks the start of an era of close collaboration and coherent action.

“Our response to the green paper is just part of our ongoing, proactive engagement with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy – most recently demonstrated through our work on the UK glass industry’s decarbonisation and energy efficiency action plan.”
